Obituary

Alice E. Sheppard, age 97, died on January 14, 2024. She was born December 18, 1926, on a farm south of Syracuse, daughter of William and Alvina (Damme) Wellman. She married Ralph Sheppard on June 19, 1960, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Syracuse and was a lifelong member of that church. Her husband died on August 3, 2001.

She graduated from Syracuse High School in May of 1946. She worked in the Lippold Drug Store for 4 ½ years, was a bookkeeper for Syracuse Farm Equipment for 27 ½ years and worked for Maverick Media for 14 years. She retired in February of 2000.

In 1972 she and her husband were the first ones to build their home in the Swanson Heights area and continued to build more houses. They took many vacations in the campers they had built and also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, playing bingo and writing a family tree on both sides of the family. In later years she enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with her family and friends. On September 1, 2004, she moved to Prairie Hill and served on the Syracuse Housing Authority Board for 10 years.

Surviving are her nieces and nephews Bill (Marilyn) Farmer of Syracuse, Bev (Ken) DeRoe of Syracuse, Linda Brandt of Lincoln, Bob & Judy Farmer of Missouri, Gene (Ruth) Mandery of Missouri, Gary Mandery, Sharon Mandery, Ken (Dee) Wellman all of Lincoln and David (Vicki) Mandery of Tecumseh; also great and great great nieces and nephews; step daughter Eugenia (Fred) Phillips; three step grandchildren; also step great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, parents, brother Alvin Wellman and sisters Vera Farmer & Viola Mandery.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse. Burial will follow at the Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.

Pallbearers will be Gene Mandery, Ken Wellman, Craig DeRoe, Marty DeRoe, Brian Farmer and Tyler Crownover.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 21 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse.

Memorials are suggested to St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse.
