Alys Marie Gately was born on March 2, 1923, to Arthur and Leata Witt of Syracuse, Nebraska.  She married Dr. Harold S. Gately on April 9, 1944.  In 1945 Alys Marie graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Nursing with degrees of Registered Nurse and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  She worked as a surgical nurse at the local hospital and assisted her husband in his medical practice.  Alys Marie was a member of the Luther Memorial Church.  She was past president of the Lutheran Church Women and of the Syracuse Junior Women's Club.  She was a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader and a 4-H leader.  Alys Marie and her husband were world travelers.  She loved animals, music, and flowers.

Surviving Alys Marie are her son Dr. Maurice K. Gately and his wife Songqian, who reside in New Jersey, and her daughter Marcia K. and her husband Dr. Cyril J. Leise, who reside in Omaha.  Also surviving are 3 grandchildren—Dr. Carisa Kymissis of New York, Mark Gately of Colorado, and Lynn Gately of Zurich, Switzerland—and 9 great grandchildren.  Alys Marie was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 69 years Dr. Harold Gately, her sister Juneta Allerheiligan of Colorado, and her granddaughter Dr. Tanya Leise of Massachusetts.

Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery next to her husband.  Memorial donations are suggested to be made to Luther Memorial Church or the Syracuse Area Churches Food Pantry.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Luther Memorial Church in Syracuse. The service will be livestreamed on the Luther Memorial Church, NE YouTube page.
