Bertha Malone passed away peacefully at South Lake Retirement Village, March 24, 2019.
Bertha Irene (Royal) Malone was born November 11, 1932 to Dennis and Mary (Kempkes) Royal as one of 18 brothers and sisters born on their farm south of Palmyra. They moved to Syracuse later where Bertha was active in volleyball and graduated at an early age. She worked at the Telephone office, then met Bourke Malone, and they were married July 22, 1952. They lived and drove back and forth from Leavenworth, KS while Bourke was in the service. Following that, they moved to the Malone Family Farm where she lived until 2014, then moving to Palmyra, and then eventually to South Lake Village.
Bertha was active in the Mothers Club, Extension Club, Square Dancing and was employed part-time as a cook at Palmyra High School.
Grandma Bertha, Aunt Bertha and Mom was the final Grand Lady of the family. Everyone always told stories of how sweet and caring she was, but her sons often knew better. Her passion was her family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Bourke, and all her brothers and sisters. Bertha is survived by her sons: Ken, Doug (Karla) Malone, Richard (Jane) Malone and Tim (Nancy) Malone. Grandchildren: Justin Malone, Heather (Malone) Fredericksen, Jacob Malone, Ryan Malone, Melissa (Malone) Payson, Michelle Malone, Courtney (Malone) Rempe, Brian Malone and Kristin (Malone) Page, and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 28th at 10 A.M. at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Palmyra. Burial will be at St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery. Lunch will follow at St. Leo's Social Hall.
A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 27th from 9 A.M. until 4 P.M. at the funeral home in Syracuse. Rosary will be held at 7 P.M. on Wednesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Palmyra.
Memorials are suggested to St. Leo's Catholic Church in Palmyra.
