Obituary

Beth Smith was born January 1, 1926 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Earl J and Mary Edith (Sweenie) Haney. She died Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Hillcrest Shadow Lake in Papillion, Nebraska, at the age of 94 years.

Beth graduated from Springfield High School, and went to work for the Omaha Municipal Court. There Seymour Smith introduced her to Robert, her soon to be husband. Beth and Robert were married June 12, 1948 at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, Nebraska and to this union were born 4 children Victoria, Craig, Calvert, and Carey.

Beth was an accomplished bowler and bridge player. She also loved reading, old movies, a good margarita, and she was the queen of trivia. She was a member of Eastern Star, and Questers. She did a great deal of volunteer work at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln and later at the Springfield First United Methodist Church, the Springfield Memorial Library, and the Sarpy County Historical Society.

Beth is survived by her brother, Clark Haney, and children Victoria Lostroh of Omaha, Craig Smith of LaVista, Calvert (John) MacKnight, of Papillion, Dr. Carey (Dr. Steven) Ryan, of La Vista, 9 grandchildren - Matthew Daharsh, Christopher (Marita) Lostroh, Kelly (Ashley) Smith, Robert (Melanie) Lostroh, Ryan (Rachel) Smith, Beth (Tony) Kaplan, Timothy (Laura) Ryan, Rob MacKnight, Catherine (Aaron) Prestito, and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents Earl J and Mary Edith Haney; her husband the Honorable Judge Robert L. Smith passed away in 1999.

Memorial services will be Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church, 480 Main Street, Springfield, Nebraska with burial of Cremains at 1:00 P.M. at the Springfield Cemetery. Family suggest memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 480 Main Street, Springfield, NE, 68059, and the Springfield Memorial Library, 665 Main Street, Springfield, NE, 68059.
