Carol Jean Gerking passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Johnson County Hospital after complications with a recent surgery.
Carol was born June 9, 1953, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City to Harlin Harvey and Doris Marie (Study) Bruns. She grew up in Talmage, NE and attended high school in Cook, NE. She was baptized December 6, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed there in 1968.
On November 25, 1969, Carol was united in marriage to Lowell Ray Gerking at Trinity Lutheran Church in Talmage, NE. Lowell and Carol had three children: Timothy, Tracy, and William.
Carol worked various jobs over the years including Cargill, Pharma Chemie, and a cook at White Horse, Broken Spoke, BJs, The Diamond, and most recently Lorton Lounge. Carol loved to spend time in her garden and canning her bounty. She found joy in sharing the extras with family and friends.
Carol and Lowell also loved to fish in the nearby Nemaha River. Taking grandkids along was always special for Carol. She liked to watch them play “gar darts” and catch sand toads to use for bait. Carol cherished family time, having picnics at the South 80, and chatting with her neighbors.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by husband, Lowell Gerking of Talmage; son Tim (Bernie) Gerking of Talmage, daughter Tracy (Brad) Riensche of Firth, and son William (Karen) Gerking of Talmage; grandchildren: Alex Riensche, Krista (Joshua) Starr, Heather Riensche, Kindra (Travis) Jones, and Devin (Brandy) Dean; great grandchildren: Ava, August, and Aurora Dean, and Remington Jones; and many friends.
