Obituary

Spangler, Charles E., age 80, of rural Murray, NE, died Wednesday July 11, 2007. Born Murray March 16,1927 to C. Everett and Ellen Spangler, he was a graduate of Iowa State College, and a Navy veteran who participated in the Bikini Atoll Atomic Bomb tests in the Pacific. A lifelong farmer, he was honored by the Federal Land Bank in 1967 with the Golden Anniversary award in recognition of his outstanding record as a farmer and citizen. Charles and his wife received a Master Conservationist Award in 1994 from the Omaha World-Herald. He chaired the Cass County Planning Commission for 19 years and served 35 years on the farmer-elected Cass County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (now the Farm Service Agency). He served as Deacon and Elder of Murray Presbyterian Church, and President of District #56 School Board (now Conestoga).

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia; children William (Nancy) of Palo Alto, CA, Deborah (Robert Koelling) of Powell, WY, Dr. Henry (Patricia) of Topeka, KS, and Mark (Laurie) of Murray; grandchildren Charlie, Emily, Andy, Glenn Perry, Everett, Glenn, Ericka, and Zoe; sister and brother-in-law Charlene and William P. Cummings of Sun City West, AZ; cousins, nieces, and nephews.


Open casket visitation will be at the Murray Presbyterian Church 1-9 p.m., Monday July 16, with family attending 6-8 p.m. The memorial service will be 9 a.m., Tuesday July 17 at the Murray Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Heidi McGinness officiating. Memorials to Murray Presbyterian Church or Habitat for Humanity.
