Daniel William Kinder was born November 3, 1950, to Barnett and Doris Kinder of Gretna, NE. In 1956, his family moved to Valley, NE where they spent several years farming. Dan and his older sister Barnita have many happy memories from that time, like the day Dan went out to check on the Shetland pony that they were boarding in their barn. Immediately, he ran back to the house to report that there was a baby Shetland in the stall too! The baby was a surprise to everyone, and Dan was thrilled when the owner of the horse told him that he could keep the foal. Dan named him Sugar.
Sometime later, Barnett and Doris purchased a bar in Valley, which they named "Barney's". Dan enjoyed helping at his family's business and doing other odd jobs around town.
Recently, when asked if he was happy with his life, Dan replied, "Yes. God has given me Choices. I was able to do what I wanted to do, and I feel like God has always taken care of me." Dan's life choices reveal a readiness for adventure, a desire for independence and a love for family.
Dan and Barnita's father passed away in the mid-70's so when, at the end of that decade, his mother and her husband announced that they would be moving from Nebraska to the state of Washington, Dan was ready to join them in that Pacific Northwest adventure. They lived in a "postcard-perfect" mountain river valley in the Kettle Falls area. It was beautiful and it afforded Dan ample opportunity to camp, fish, hunt and chase bears away from their mailbox. He made friends with "old timers" who told tales of working Buffalo Bill's Wild West Shows, he found abandoned mines while exploring and he worked for a group that hosted a very large horseback ride/camp.
Eventually, Dan's journey brought him back to Nebraska, and back to his sister's family in Louisville, NE. He bought a home and, through the years, found immense satisfaction in working on his Walnut Street fixer upper. He loved making something out of nothing, and that that talent was especially apparent in the things he engineered out of metals and motors.
Upon his return to Nebraska and at the suggestion of his brother-in-law Jim, Dan joined the Local Carpenters Union. There, he began laying the foundation for carpentry skills that he would use and hone all through the rest of his life. Jim and Dan enjoyed working many projects together. When Jim started his own company, Dan went to work for him full time, eventually, taking over the cabinet shop until Jim retired.
Dan was a fighter, and he did not complain. He lived his entire adult life with Type 1 diabetes. He dealt with a prostate and bone cancer for nine years and was able to enjoy life during most of that time. In the fall of 2021, his health took a turn for the worse as the cancer entered his bone marrow. His last months were very difficult, but he held onto his faith in God, and he finished well.
Dan is survived by his loving sister Barnita, brother-in-law Jim, niece Jodie (Rob) Staben, niece Jamie Williams, great-nieces and great-nephews, several aunts, cousins and an uncle.
