Obituary

Darrel Austin Davis, age 90 years, of North Platte, formerly of Grand Island, passed away peacefully at dawn as the rain began to fall on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. He was the first born son to Carl and Ethel (Sinclair) Davis on March 7, 1936, in Plainview, Arkansas.

The family moved to Grand Island when he was very young. Darrel excelled in football, basketball, and track in school. After graduating with the GISH Class of 1954, Darrel enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served proudly in active duty and the reserves until September 29, 1962, when he was honorably discharged and received the Good Conduct Medal. He was married in 1955 with five children born to this union – Robert, Richard, Lisa, Darla Jean, and John.

Nearly 63 years ago on June 10, 1963, he married the love of his life, Myrna Jeanne Richards. Two children were born to this union - Tarn and Moraine. Darrel retired as the Retread Plant Manager for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Grand Island. In 1985 Darrel and Myrna purchased the Orange Julius at the Conestoga Mall. After selling the business, they split their time between their homes in Grand Island and Arizona City for many years – golfing every chance he could get.

Darrel was a member of the Arizona City Golf Club, Liederkranz, Eagles, and Veteran’s clubs, several bowling and golf leagues, Pumpers and Penny’s coffee groups and Messiah Lutheran (GI) and First Lutheran (NP). He was a Boy Scout Leader and Nebraska Senior Golf Association Tour member. He won several blue ribbons for his stained glass art projects.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Myrna, daughter Moraine (Charlie) Davis-Magnuson and ADORED grandchildren, Bennett and Sawyer Magnuson all of North Platte, son Robert (Leslie) Davis of New Bern, NC, sister-in-law, Eleanor Davis and nephew Tom (Andrea) Davis of Spokane, WA and the pup he adopted on his 80th birthday – Scotty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Melvin and William Davis, beloved son, Tarn Davis (2022), nephews, Rick and Terry Davis, and furry family – Rowdy, Bandit, and Lucky.

Visitation will be from 12:00pm – 1:45pm on May 26, 2026, at Fusselman-Allen-Harvey Funeral Home in Elmwood, Nebraska. Graveside services will follow at 2:00pm at the Wabash Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to PAWS-itive Partners Humane Society in North Platte. Dad loved his furry family so much that he donated his pacemaker to give a pup a chance at a longer life.
