Obituary

Don L. Copley was born on September 3, 1926 in Panama, Nebraska to Ralph and Fern (Tilton) Copley. He passed away on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse, Nebraska at the age of 82 years, 4 months, 16 days.

After graduating from High School, Don joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served until 1946 during World War II. When he returned home he met and latter was married to Virginia Schroeder in Independence, Mo. on May 5, 1950.

Don worked as a distributor of Beer for Wilson Distributor's in Lincoln, Neb. for 18 years and also owned & operated Don's Tap and Don's Market, Syracuse for many years.

He was a member of the Eagles Club and Elk's Club in Nebraska City; past member of the Advisory Board of the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse. Don was an active member of the Mid-Otoe County V.F.W. #5547 where he served as post Commander from 1971-1972 and 2002-2004 and he was also a member of the Massie-Richards Post #100 American Legion where he served as commander in 1973. In both organizations, he held many other offices including Sr. and Jr. Vice Commander. He was on the Vets Club Committee, the Post Home Committee and a V.F.W. Pick 6 Account salesman for several years.

Survivors: daughters, Terri Smithers & husband, Dan, Tecumseh; Anita Schomerus & husband, Lynn, Unadilla; son, Bill Copley & wife, Brenda, Syracuse; six grandchildren: Jason Schomerus; Jamie Jeffrey; Traci Johnson; Brianna, Brian, Brett Copley; great-grandkids: Sierra Ihde; Karson & Karter Jeffrey; Addison, Kyler Johnson; sister, Nancy Christensen, Bennet; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Preceded in death by parents; wife, Virginia of 54 years; and brother, Keith. He will be greatly missed by family and many friends.

Funeral 10:30 a.m. Friday (1/23/09) at St. John's United Church of Christ, Syracuse. Rev. John Finster. Burial: Park Hill Cemetery, Syracuse, with full military rites by Massie-Richards Post #100, American Legion & Mid-Otoe County VFW #5547, both of Syracuse. Visitation 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Thursday (1/22/09); and the casket will be open one hour before church services Friday. Memorials to family's choice. Arrangements by: Fusselman-Wymore Funeral Home, Syracuse.
