On November 10, 1945, Doris married Barney Kinder, a neighbor boy who lived down the road. They farmed west of Wahoo, and then moved to Gretna where Barney worked as a farm hand. From there they moved to Valley and farmed until they bought a Bar and Grill there in town. Doris and Barney were married for almost 30 years. Several years later, she married Ray Smith. Together they owned and operated a bar in Brainard, Nebraska, until they moved to Washington State. In Washington, Doris spent time working in a department store, and also in a saw mill.
In 1991, returned to Louisville. She lived with her son, until she was able to purchase a little fixer-upper on Depot Street. She was proud of that home, and some years later, she was able to purchase a larger home that had a fenced in yard for her pets. In 2010, her health declined. When faced with the reality of needing additional care, she chose to return to Wahoo, Nebraska, for that was the place that felt like home to her. Her final years were spent at South Haven Living Center, until she passed away there on Wednesday, September 25th, 2013.
