Ervin Carl Hespen was born on November 8, 1914 in Syracuse, Nebraska to Harm and Maria (Juilfs) Hespen. He passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 2 days.
Ervin was raised in the Syracuse area and attended school there. He entered the U.S. Army on December 23, 1940 and served in the South Pacific including Guam during the World War II. He discharged from the Army on May 31, 1945 and returned home and began working for the Ford Garage and the R.E.A. (Rural Electric Association). He met and was married to Arleen (Wellman) Peek on February 10, 1950 in Syracuse. In 1952 they moved to California, while there, Ervin worked with North American-Rockwell on the Missile Program and also on the Apollo Space Electric Technician Program. While in California he established the first American Legion Organization. They moved back to Syracuse in 1979 and he worked for the Ford Garage for many years. In 2008 they moved to Nebraska City.
He is survived by his wife, Arleen Hespen of Nebraska City, NE; Son, Roland Dean Peek (who he raised from age three), Roland's fiancée, Joy Williams both of Atlanta, GA; 2 granddaughters, Kelly and husband Kevan Price and Kimberly and husband Rob Meade. 2 great grandsons, Dylan Price and Nicolas Meade, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna & Dick Neeman of Wausa, NE; Sister-in-law, Avis Hespen of Syracuse, NE. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Harve, William, Fred, Alvin, Lenhard, Ernest, sisters, Sena (Mrs. John) Gellerman and Anna (Mrs. Gus) Wachs, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ardella (Wellman) & Robert Hespen.
