Evelyn Schewe Sheesley was born on February 6, 1913 on a farm near Weeping Water, Nebraska. She was the middle of three daughters born to Lodge and Myrtle (Waltz) Caygill. Evelyn grew up in Elmwood, where she attended kindergarten, elementary, and high school. She went one year to Cotner College in Lincoln, where she wanted to major in music. Because of the depression, she did not fnish. Instead, she went to Lincoln School of Commerce and got her secretarial degree. She worked for three years at Security Mutual Life Insurance Company in Lincoln. In 1937 she married Vernon Schewe and moved to the family farm near Murdock, where she spent the next 52 years of her life working beside her husband raising two daughters and helping with an active farm life. Vernon passed away in 1989. A few years later, Evelyn married Sterling Sheesley. They spent the next several years traveling the country in their motor home and visiting family and friends.
Over the years Evelyn had many interests and was involved with many activities. She loved to entertain and always had big family dinners for all holidays. She also liked to entertain friends and was involved with card groups and picture parties. Evelyn and Vernon loved to go to the University of Nebraska football games with their "Little Red" bunch in the red and white school bus. Evelyn will always be remembered for her adventurous spirit. She recalled fondly the time in 1931 when she purchased $1 ticket to take a ride in a barnstormer's airplane. She loved to travel, and over the years Evelyn and Vernon went to almost every state and many European countries. Evelyn started traveling early in childhood. Her family would take long trips in their openair touring car, sometimes going for two months at a time. Music was an important part of her life. She was in the church choir, a choir leader, and also sang for many occasions. She enjoying playing the piano and organ, and with her daughters, singing together. She took up golf and liked to go to Grandpa's Woods. She also loved to paint,
bowl, and fish.
She grew up as a member of the Christian Church of Elmwood. After she married Vernon and moved to Murdock, she joined the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the Builder's Sunday School Class and the Ladies Aid Society.
She passed away on Friday, July 1, 2011 at David Place in David City, Nebraska at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Francis Melvin and Dorotha Coatman, her first husband, Vernon Paul Schewe, second husband Sterling Sheesley, and a baby son. She is survived by her two daughters; Janet (Chuck) Lambrecht of Schuyler, Nebraska and Bette(John) Kish of Humble, Texas. Other survivors are her grandchildren Dr. Susan (Dave) Walters, David Lambrecht, Carrie Ann Kish, Lt. John Paul Kish, Jr., and great grandchildren, Emily and Jennalyne Walters.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 204 Kansas Street, Murdock, NE, with burial after a Lunch will be at Elmwood, Cemetery. Family Suggests Memorials to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Murdock, NE (Music)
