Gerald H. (Jerry) Goering, 92, of Syracuse, died Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln.  A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30th at St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse. Casual dress is recommended. The service will be livestreamed on the St. John's UCC Facebook page.  Pastor Andy DeGolyer will officiate. Jerry was born Dec. 5, 1931, in Nebraska City, the son of William M. and Lydia (Eisenhauer) Goering.  He married Patricia Ann (Pat) Young on Dec. 14, 1951, in Lincoln, Neb.

Jerry was a lifelong farmer and cattleman.  He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1949 and attended the University of Nebraska for a year.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54, before returning to farm south of Syracuse.  He will be living his dream now if he is on a long car ride down minimum maintenance roads with Pat beside him.  They would be looking at cattle and crops and enjoying a trip where the gas tank and beverage cups never run empty.

After retirement, Jerry was an active volunteer, managing the post bar for Massie-Richards American Legion Post #100.  He also drove a route with Meals on Wheels throughout the area south of Syracuse.  He enjoyed helping at the Otoe County Museum of Memories and volunteered with the Burr Rescue Squad, where he was a charter member.  He was also a regular at the Syracuse Fitness Center.

He was a lifelong member St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse.  He was also a member of the Mount Moriah AF & AM (Masonic Lodge) in Syracuse until it closed and later with the Union 87 Masonic Lodge in Palmyra.  He was a 70-year member of the Massie-Richards American Legion Post #100 and a member of the Otoe County Farm Bureau.  He served on the Syracuse Community Memorial Hospital Board; the St. John's United Church of Christ council; the Burr Rescue Squad; District 41 School Board; Cook Rural Fire District Board; and the Otoe County Fair Board.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, on May 31, 2010; his parents and parents-in-law, Paul and Alice Young; three brothers-in-law (Les Willson, Dan Young and Paul Young II); and sister-in-law, MaryLou Willson; and a great-grandson, Owen Klein.

He is survived by his children: Steve Goering of Fayetteville, Ark.; Sue (Jerry) Beach of Papillion; Nancy (Dennis) Seelhoff of Syracuse; and Mary (Kelly) Kreifels of Cook; grandchildren: Lori (Adam) Holz, Nicki (Jeremy) Klein, Andy (Hilary) Seelhoff, Sheri (Travis) French, Trisha (Jason) Stanley, Toni (Matt) Young, Tim (Hilarie) Seelhoff, Greg (Katie) Beach, Joe (Teri) Kreifels, JoDee (Chris) Paulsen, Madison Goering and Clark (Anna) Goering.  He is also survived by great-grandchildren: Reed Seelhoff, Reagan Klein, Kennedy Stanley, Kamdyn Stanley, Ellary Young, Emily Holz, Rylee Seelhoff, Jamisen Klein, Truman Young, Taryn French, Kyle Holz, Drew Paulsen, Danika Kreifels, Carson Holz, Jayde Kreifels, Seth Paulsen, Charlotte Beach, Teagan French, Rorie Seelhoff, Gracie Beach, Gage Seelhoff, Wade Paulsen, Ashton Kreifels, Baker Seelhoff and Lydia Beach.  Other survivors include his brother, Keith (Marie) Goering of Syracuse; sister, Ardith (Bill) Gramlich of Fort Morgan, Colo.; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Young of Oradell, N.J.; nieces and nephews and a host of Eisenhauer cousins.

Jerry donated his body to medical science at the University of Nebraska Medical Center; eventual burial of ashes at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse will be in a private ceremony at a later date.  The family is grateful for the kind and loving care from the staffs at Linden View Assisted Living and The Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse, Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln and St. Croix Hospice.

Memorials will go to Syracuse Project Playground.
