Gladys Doris (Freudenberg) Kirchhoff, 91, of Syracuse, died peacefully at Good Samaritan Society in Syracuse on October 7, 2022, after a full and wonderful life. She was Glenn's beloved wife for 55 years.
Born on a farm 3 miles east of Syracuse, NE, on July 9, 1931, she was the youngest of three of the late Fred and Minna (Fastenau) Freudenberg. Gladys was baptized on September 9, 1931 at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Otoe, NE. She attended District #84 country school for 8 years and graduated from Syracuse High School in l948 at the age of 16.
After graduation she worked in Lincoln, NE for a short time. She then returned to Syracuse and worked at the ASCS Office for 31 years, retiring at the age of 57. She truly enjoyed working with the farmers. She helped them with various government programs and always had a joke or two to share. One highlight of her career was being given an honorable opportunity to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C. She respectfully declined.
On April 15, 1953, she married the love of her life, Glenn Kirchhoff. Two daughters, Diane and Vicki were born into the family. They enjoyed their lives together on a farm near Weeping Water, NE. They never missed the girls' school activities and enjoyed camping, card clubs, and had an active social life.
Gladys and Glenn were members of First Lutheran (North Branch), Avoca, NE. Gladys loved the church and was the first woman on the church council, serving as treasurer for 6 years. She sang in the choir and sang solos in church and at weddings.
You could always find Gladys and Glenn on the Elm's ballroom dance floor as they loved to dance to the big band music waltzes, polkas, as well as square dancing. Numerous vacations (some with kids, some without) created many fun memories. After retirement she and Glenn spent 12 winters in Mesa, AZ. In l997 they built a house and moved to Syracuse, NE. She enjoyed meeting friends for coffee in the mornings and playing cards in the afternoons. She is also known for the many dish cloths and coasters she knitted throughout her retirement.
After Glenn passed away, Gladys lived independently for 10 years in their home. She then moved to LindenView Assisted Living and loved it there for almost four years. She went from playing cards twice a week to playing twice a day. Then Covid-19 hit and they could no longer play cards so she then enjoyed playing socially-distanced BINGO. On August 24, 2022, Gladys moved to Good Samaritan Society.
She is survived by: Daughters Diane (John) Reuss of Weeping Water, Vicki Kirchhoff (Jay Carstens) of Lincoln NE. Sister-in-law Erma Bettinger, Nieces and Nephews, extended family and friends. She is greeted in heaven by her husband Glenn, Brother John Freudenberg, Sister Helen Henke, Brother-in-laws and Sister-in-laws, her parents, extended family and many dear friends.
