Gladys Jean (Wilhelm) Sorensen was born on May 22, 1928 in Tecumseh, NE. She passed away on January 18, 2013 at the age of 84 at her daughter Kathy's home with her husband Merl and grandchildren Kim & Tom at her side.
She was the daughter of Harry and Katharine (Hild) Wilhelm. She lived in Tecumseh until June of 1944 when her family moved to Palmyra and opened Wilhelm Grocery Store where she worked until she graduated. She finished her Junior and Senior years at Palmyra High School, graduating in 1946.
She met Merl Sorensen when he returned from the Navy. They eloped and were married on January 11, 1947 in Wichita, KS. They raised Jim, Bob & Kathy and were married 66 years on January 11, 2013.
She was the co-owner of Sorensen Machine for 45 years. She also worked at the sewing factory in Syracuse and was the temporary post master in Palmyra for 10 years. She was a member of the Palmyra Presbyterian Church, a member of Eastern Star and the Legion Post Auxiliary.
Merl and Gladys lived in Palmyra until March 2011 when they moved to Savannah Pines in Lincoln. Gladys and Merl wintered in Yuma, AZ for 20 years and have many dear friends there. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, flowers, cards and board games. Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harry & Katharine, her brother Bob Wilhelm and granddaughter Jennifer Jean English.
She is survived by her husband Merl of Lincoln, her sons; Jim (Judy) Sorensen of Keller, TX, Bob (Natalie) Sorensen of Lincoln, her daughter Kathy Sorensen of Lincoln, her sister, Mary Ann (Wilhelm) White of Lincoln, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday January 24, 2013 at 2:30 P.M. at the Presbyterian Church in Palmyra, NE with Rev. Carl Eskridge officiating.
Visitation is Wednesday January 23 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home in Syracuse.
