Obituary

Harold Antes was born May 29, 1918 on the family farm near Syracuse to Phillip and Ethel (Davis) Antes. He attended District 10 School (completing the 10th grade) after which he graduated from Syracuse High School. On June 1, 1938 he married his high school sweetheart, Fay Sugden. From that union was born three children: Michael (Judy) Antes, Syracuse; Joan (Frank) Miranda, Oklahoma City; and Doug (Becky) Antes, Syracuse. Harold was a lifelong and active member of Syracuse Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and holding various offices and duties. He and Fay lived on the family farm until 1970 at which time they moved into town. He lived his entire life in the Syracuse area and devoted a good portion of his time in the willing service of others. His many volunteer activities included membership on the District 10 School Board, the board of Community Memorial Hospital, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was also a leader of the Brownell 4-H Club for which he received numerous service recognitions. He held jobs with numerous businesses in and around Syracuse, including Electro Gas, Snyder Implement, Staack Furniture., ASCS, Bottcher Feed, Post Brothers Hardware, and Syracuse Grain. But no matter the job, he would always go back to the farm to help whenever he found the time.

After moving into town in 1970, Harold and Fay enjoyed the company of many friends and neighbors, and the special blessings of their ten grandkids: Julie (Rick) DeBoer, Seward; Lorri (Max) Kelch, Papillion; Shellee (Jim) Kotera, Gretna; Melissa (Justin) Apel, Bennet; Cory (Berrit) Furse, Mt. Pleasant, SC; Erin (Seth) Von Tungeln, Oklahoma City; Jeni (Mike) Leefers, Otoe; and Joshua, Tim and Sarah Antes, all of Syracuse. The extended family also includes fifteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Being a very social man, Harold would seldom miss an opportunity to enjoy coffee at M&W, and later at Hank's Garage, or at the Post Home on Friday and Saturday evenings. During the last few years he would make the trip to Hank's and the Post Home on his scooter. He also loved spending time at Doug's shop with Dave, Randy, Darrell, Danny, Leon, Don, Josh and Tim. They never tired of hearing his stories he loved to share of farming years ago.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who were so kind to him, watching out for him and making sure he was always safe and happy. We are especially grateful to his many loving caregivers: Hank & Luke Staack, Allan Young, Bob Harrington, Joyce Schultz, and of course the wonderful staff at Community Memorial, Good Samaritan, and AseraCare Hospice. Your love, kindness, and compassion have been simply immeasurable. All of you made the last four years of life without his beloved Fay not only more enjoyable but also much easier to endure. May God bless you all.
