Dr. H.S. Gately died the evening of October 15 at age 91 in Lincoln. Harold Stephen Gately was born on July 10, 1922, the son of Stephen R. Gately and Emma R. (Seelhoff) Gately. He was baptized and confirmed in the Syracuse Luther Memorial Church. As a boy he was very active in Scouting earning the Life Scout award plus thirty-eight merit badges. He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1940 with a President's Scholarship to Creighton University. In October, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Specialized Training Program and attended Creighton University School of Medicine. At the time of graduation, Dr. Gately was commissioned a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was placed on standby status. In 1945 he married his high school classmate and sweetheart, Miss Alys Marie Witt. They were married 69 ½ years. They had 2 children, a son Maurice Kent and a daughter Marcia Kay. Dr. Gately completed a 15-month internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha. In December 1947, he joined Dr. C.R. Williams in Syracuse in the practice of Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Gately and a medical associate, Dr. William Clark, in 1948 began the process to secure a hospital in Syracuse. This effort culminated two years later with the completion of the Community Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gately served as a scoutmaster of Syracuse Troop 337 from 1958 through 1961. He was a member of the Otoe County, Nebraska State and American Medical Associations. He was also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 1981 after completing 2000 hours of post graduate education, he was elected a Fellow in the Academy at a ceremony held in Miami, Florida. During his practice, he and Dr. Williams entered into a partnership with Dr. Carl Formanack; and together they built the Syracuse Medical Center. He loved yard work. He liked to travel the world. He built a 6'x10' landscaped model train. He was a life member of American Legion Post #100.
Dr. Gately is survived by his wife Alys Marie; son Dr. Maurice Gately and his wife Songqian of Chatham, NJ; daughter Marica and her husband Dr. Cyril Leise of Omaha; granddaughter Dr. Tanya Leise and her husband Dr. Andrew Cohen of Amherst, MA; granddaughter Carisa Kymissis and her husband Dr. John Kymissis of New York, NY; granddaughter Lynn Gately and her husband Hao Ly of Zurich, Switzerland; grandson Mark Gately and his wife Jenni Maroney of Niwot, CO; step grandson Luyang Yang of New York, NY; 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Monday October 21, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.
Visitation will be held Sunday October 20 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorials in lieu of flowers to the Syracuse Food Bank or Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.
