Helen L. Luetchens, 80 of Murdock, passed away one day shy of her 81st birthday on February 17, 2024. She was born to Harry & Luella (Anderson) Nielsen in Omaha on February 18, 1943. Helen graduated from Benson High School in the class of 1961. After high school she worked for 2 years at Nebraska Savings and Loan. On September 25, 1962, she met her future husband Wayne on a blind date, and they would get married just over a year later on September 29, 1963, at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha.
After they married, Helen and Wayne lived and farmed near Murdock. She loved living in the country and helping on the farm while raising her three daughters. In 1985, she started working in the Lodge at Platte River State Park. Then in 1993 she worked for the Louisville Public Schools in the cafeteria, until retirement in 2008.
Helen served her community by volunteering on the election board in the 1980's, as well as sewing with the Sew & Sew's, which made quilts for those in need. She also took care of her church family by working and providing food for many funerals. At home she enjoyed gardening and sewing for her family. She made clothes for her children and later would make dolls and stuffed animals for the grandchildren. She found a passion in quilting and made sure each family member had a quilt, which is something they cherish. They also hold dear the memories of her being a grandma, which includes her baking, playing games, and always sitting on the floor playing with her grandkids well into her 70's.
She is survived by her husband Wayne; daughters Terri (Brad) Johnson, Sandra (Robert) Verstraete, Debbie (Matt) Neis; grandchildren Hilarie (Tim) Seelhoff, Tyler (Brianna) Johnson, Camille Verstraete, Claire Verstraete, Carmyn Verstraete, Blake Neis, Brandon Neis; great grandchildren Gage Seelhoff, Baker Seelhoff, Brooks Johnson & Annalise Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
