Howard C. (Buck) McCallum, 84, of Syracuse passed away Wednesday, October 05, 2011 in Syracuse, Nebraska after being diagnosed with brain cancer in August. Buck was a Nebraska City fireman for twenty years and in the Nebraska National Guard for more than ten years, ending his guard career as a master sergeant, and was awarded the Knights of Aksarben Army National Guard and Reserve outstanding soldier award in 1959. Buck was an electrician by trade, but his passions were his family and friends and being in his woodworking shop.
Buck was born in Nebraska City to Howard C. McCallum, Sr. and Florence (Brust) McCallum on April 20, 1927. He married Barbara Peacock in Nebraska City on June 3, 1949. Survived by wife Barbara, sons and daughters-in-law Timothy and Pam McCallum of Nederland, Colorado and Philip and Lana McCallum of Glen Haven, Colorado, daughter and son-in-law Lori and Bob Carper of Syracuse, Nebraska, grandson and wife Daniel and Kristina McCallum of Omaha, Nebraska, and grand-daughters Rebecca McCallum of Aurora, Colorado and Kelli Carper of Murdock, Nebraska, sister Marion Garrett of Nebraska City, sisters-in-law Arlene Peacock of Plano, TX and Melba Peacock of Broomfield, CO, several nieces and nephews, and best friends Larry and Margo Larson. Preceded by parents, sisters Helen Homeyer, Minerva Chandler and Ruth Bryant, brother Philip McCallum, brothers-in-law George Peacock and Rolland Peacock and sister-in-law Marcia Peacock.
No services at Buck's request. Cremation. A celebration of life
will be held for family, friends and neighbors on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Buck and Barb's home. Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.
