Obituary

Imo Berner, 96, of Syracuse passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, NE. She was born August 8, 1920 in rural Syracuse, the daughter of Otto & Anna (Haveman) Stutt. She attended country school at District 87 in rural Avoca. She was married to Roy Berner on September 3, 1941. They were blessed with one daughter, Cheryl Ann. Roy & Imo lived on the farm in the Avoca and Otoe area, and moved to Syracuse in 1980.

Imo was a life-long member of North Branch Church in rural Avoca where she was baptized, confirmed, married and now will be laid to rest. She was a member of the Evening Star Circle at the church, and took time to donate to the local Food Pantry Drive every month. She also enjoyed fellowship with members of the Jolly Workers and Jolly Neighbors Clubs.

For many years, Roy & Imo went to wedding and anniversary dances, played pinochle, vacationed in Colorado & Branson, and took bus trips with friends. Imo loved quilting and spent many hours cutting, piecing and sewing. Hosting tea parties and pushing John Deere tractors with grandchildren, and then great grandchildren, brought Imo much joy. Her home was always beautifully decorated for each holiday, and she enjoyed shopping year-round for Christmas gift bargains.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Leefers (Ted). Grandchildren: Michael Leefers (Jennifer) and Valerie Stranathan (Shawn). Great-grandchildren: Morgan Leefers, Dalton Leefers, Kaitlyn Stranathan and Dylan Stranathan. Brother-in-law, Donald Hopp; sister-in-law, Margaret Stubbendick; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Allen & Pauline Hauschild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roy; sister Dorothy Hopp; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws: John & Elsie Berner, Lesly & Laverta Berner; and brother-in-law Glen Stubbendick.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church (North Branch) in rural Avoca, NE. Burial will be at First Lutheran Cemetery of Avoca.

Visitation will be Monday, March 20 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse, with family greeting people from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorials suggested to First Lutheran Church of Avoca.
