Ivan George Althouse, Jr. MD
7 Jan 1931 – 30 Nov 2007
Ivan was born in Waverly, Nebraska to Ivan G. Althouse, Sr. and Minnie L. (Stohlmann) on January 7th, 1931 and passed away on November 30, 2007, after a long fight with Alzheimer's Disease. The son of a proud farming community, he grew up with the conservative values of the heartland of this country. In his constant pursuit of more, he sold insurance, pursued a dream for college education, graduated from the University of Nebraska, and went on to finish medical school. In the process he met and married Diann (Benedict) form Jefferson, Iowa, whom he married and with whom he had two children, Kylie and Matt.
Ivan practiced medicine in several communities, including a few Nebraska towns, Montana, Minnesota, and finally settled in Quincy, California. His love of the outdoors was well fitted in Quincy with an abundance of hunting, fishing, motorcycling and snowmobiling with the Sierra Nevada Mountains surrounding his home. As children left the nest, Ivan moved to Incline Village, Nevada, where he was the driving energy behind starting the first hospital in the north shore of Lake Tahoe, while continuing his medical practice. A talented physician, Ivan still made house calls when this practice was long forgotten.
Brother-in-law Dr. J Benedict says it well, "Ivan lived a full life; a special man, an entrepreneur, a physician, a loving father, a materialistic person, charming and chaotic in his approach to life, above others in his plane and in attitude, and a tragedy in his last days. Taller than most, he was a peer to many others. (We) Love and respect who he was, and mourn his absence which began much earlier than his dying."
