In Loving Memory of James (Jim) H. Pierce

April 2, 1934 – September 15, 2026

James (Jim) H. Pierce, 92, of Syracuse, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Eventide Martha House in Lincoln. He was born on April 2, 1934, in Elkton, Michigan, to Harry and Elizabeth (Furness) Pierce.

Jim grew up during the Depression years, a time that taught him lessons he carried with him throughout his entire life. He learned to appreciate the little things—the love of family, the friendship of others, and the simple moments that make life meaningful. Those lessons helped shape the man he became: kind, generous, hardworking, and deeply devoted to the people he loved.

On June 4, 1988, Jim married Cheryl Halm, beginning a marriage filled with love, family, and countless memories. Cheryl was his wife and his partner, and together they built a life centered around the people who mattered most to them.

Jim was, above all else, a father. His children were his greatest priority, and he was there for every milestone, every celebration, and every moment when they needed him. He welcomed his children's friends into his home as though they were his own, always making people feel welcome. His loving heart and generosity extended far beyond his immediate family. Jim had a way of making people feel that they mattered.

His family continued to grow through the years, bringing him the joy of being a grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He leaves behind a family spanning generations—a lasting reflection of the love and devotion he gave throughout his life.

Jim also lived a life of service. He honorably served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force. After his military retirement, his commitment to serving others continued through the VFW. He traveled frequently to meetings and conventions throughout the country and proudly served for one year as Nebraska VFW State Commander.

His dedication to his community and fellow veterans was evident through his involvement with the Sesostris Shrine, American Legion, DAV, and the Masonic Lodge in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Duluth, Minnesota. He was also an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse.

Jim was a hardworking man who never seemed afraid to take on something new. He owned the Attic Thrift Shop on Main Street in Syracuse and Dino-Mite Auto Repair Service. He spent many years as Building Materials Manager for Montgomery Ward department stores at several locations and also managed restaurants, including Village Inn Pancake House.

Yet, while Jim accomplished much during his lifetime, the greatest measure of his life was not found in his work or titles. It was found in the people he loved and the lives he touched.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his children, Kim, Jon, Gary, Julie, Susan, Todd, Mindy, and Shane; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Elizabeth; mother-in-law Charlene Reid; brothers Willard and Joe and Joe’s wife, Joan; sister, Geneva Schember; sisters-in-law Joan (Kenneth) Pierce, Sonia (Jerry) Pierce and Linda Versaw; daughter-in-law Connie (Kim) Pierce; and great-granddaughters, twins Kamryn and Keiley LeBleu.

There are some people whose absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled. Jim was one of those people. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a veteran, a friend, and a man who gave generously of himself to others.

His family will miss his presence, his kindness, his stories, and the love he so freely gave. But the greatest part of Jim will remain—in the family he loved so deeply, in the generations that came after him, and in the many people whose lives were made better simply because he was a part of them.

Jim's life was a gift to those who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, today and for generations to come.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever remembered.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Syracuse. The service will be livestreamed on the church Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 25 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse.
