John (Bill) Fusselman, 88 of Syracuse passed away at home surrounded by family on January 19, 2016. He was born to Warren J. & Sadie J. (Hammerlun) Fusselman on January 26, 1927 in Anoka, NE.
John graduated from Bristow high school and then enlisted in the U.S. Army serving as a S/Sgt. during WWII. He married Mildred V. Johnson on December 1, 1946 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bristow, NE. Together they raised five children, Jon, Marcy, Alice, Laurie and Mary.
John attended the University of Nebraska and then graduated from San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1949 with degree in Mortuary Science. After graduating he went to work for Crosby Kunold Mortuaries in Omaha. In 1953 he opened Fusselman Funeral home in Louisville, NE. During this same time, he worked at Nichol's Grocery store part time to earn groceries and was the Federal and Iowa Inspector of cement at Ash Grove Cement Co. While living in Louisville, John operated a self-service laundry and ran the ambulance service for 16 years.
John worked as an embalmer and funeral director for various funeral homes around the area. In 1964 John along with his business partner Milo Perry purchased Sattler Funeral Home in Plattsmouth, NE. In 1968 he purchased Tonsing Funeral Home in Syracuse and operated the Fusselman-Perry Funeral Home in Louisville, Syracuse and Plattsmouth. After his retirement, he remained active with the Funeral Homes until the time of his death. John was a licensed funeral director for 60 years
John was very active in every community that he was in. He served on church councils at, Luther Memorial Church in Syracuse, Christ Lutheran Church in Louisville, and St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Omaha. He was the past president of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association, a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, a member of the Syracuse & Louisville Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. He served on many boards including, the Boards of Education in Louisville and Syracuse for a total of 24 years, Syracuse Community Memorial Hospital and Syracuse Country Club. He was also a member and Past Commander of Henry A. Newman Post #353, American Legion and member of Massie-Richards Post #100, American Legion. John was also in charge of the United Way Campaign in Syracuse for 8 years.
In his free time John enjoyed working outdoors. He always had a big garden and flower bed. He enjoyed taking vacations with his family, reading, playing bridge and love of his dogs.
He is survived by his Son: Dr. Jon (Susan) Fusselman of Springfield, MO; Daughters: Marcy (Randy) Wilcke of Clinton, IA, Alice Perry of Syracuse, Laurie (Dan) Shultz of Omaha, Mary (Rob) Arnold of Lenexa, KS; 8 Grandchildren; 7 Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Faye Hinkhouse, LouAnn Hanson; Sister-in-law: Shirley Wacker.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife: Millie; Son-in-law: Bob Perry; Brothers: Dean & Gary.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:30 A. M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Families choice.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 21, from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. at the Fusselman Allen Harvey Funeral Home 413 Elm, Louisville, NE, and Friday, January 22, from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. at Fusselman Allen Harvey Funeral Home 644 Park Street, Syracuse, NE, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 P.M. at each location.
