Obituary
Kathleen Marie Shimek was born on July 26, 1935, to Howard and Lucille Speer in rural Sheridan County near Hay Springs, Nebraska. She passed away on November 23, 2009 in Syracuse, NE at the age of 74.
Kathy graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1953 and attended Chadron State Teacher's College. She taught Country School in Hay Springs for two years. She married Bob W. Horn on February 14, 1956, in Hay Springs, Nebraska, and to this union they had one daughter.
In 1959, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska, where she worked at City National Bank for 23 years. In 1982, her husband Bob died, and in 1986, she married Leonard A. Shimek. Leonard died in 1991. In 1992, Kathy received an Associates Degree in Accounting at the age of 56.
In 1998, Kathy moved to Syracuse, Nebraska, and was employed for 9 years at First National Bank of Syracuse as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Luther Memorial Church, Circle 1, and the VFW and American Legion Auxillaries. She was a Volunteer for the Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and many other organizations.
Kathy is survived by her daughter, Cheryl and John Halvorsen, of Syracuse, NE, three step children Jeff and Linda Shimek, of Garland, NE, Steve Shimek, of Agoura Hills, CA, and Jennifer and Jim Smith, of Lincoln, NE one grandchild and five step grandchildren, a brother Richard and Joan Speer, of Fort Collins, Co, a sister Janet Russell, of Oceanside, CA, and many in laws, nieces and nephew.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Horn and Leonard Shimek, her parents, her infant brother, Joseph Speer, her brother Ronald L. Speer, and many other family members and friends.
Memorial services will be Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church - Syracuse, NE
Burial will be at a later date in Hay Springs Cemetery
VISITATION with No Viewing, due to cremation, will be Friday, November 27th from 1:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. with family greeting friends from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M.
