Obituary

Kenneth Dwain Metzger, 92, of Syracuse passed away on March 29, 2016 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. He was born on September 19, 1923 in Syracuse to William F. and Helen P. (Bose) Metzger. Following graduation from Syracuse High School in 1942, he worked briefly in Syracuse before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from February 1943-February 1946. During his time in the navy, Kenny became an Aviation Machinist and was a trained aerial gunner and radar operator in the Pacific Fleet.

He married Verna M. Michon on August 1, 1953 in Auburn. They resided in Syracuse and had four children: Ron, Terry, Kay and Kent. In 1948, Kenny began 33 years working for the Soil Conservation Service, first in Syracuse and then Lincoln. He became certified as a Senior Engineering Technician. Kenny was a member of the Syracuse United Methodist Church for over 75 years, the American Legion Post #100, and the VFW Post 5547. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf over the years and watching baseball games, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. Kenny also liked solving crossword puzzles and watching movies with his family.

Kenny is survived by his children: Ron (Dee) Metzger, Elkhorn; Terry Metzger, Phoenix, AZ; Kay (Mike) Gerdes, Talmage; Kent Metzger, Everett, WA, grandchildren: Courtney Gerdes, Omaha; Cara (David) Mack, Scottsdale, AZ; Brett (Mary) Metzger, Omaha; Carley (Jeremy) Goracke, Cook; Kristen (Nick) Niver, Omaha; Kendra Gerdes, Talmage; Thomas Gerdes, Omaha; Taylor Gerdes, Talmage; great-grandchildren: Keegan, Kellan, and Brennan Mack; Grace and Luke Metzger; Braxtin Goracke; Aubree and Brynlee Niver; nephew Doug (Mary) Metzger and family, Lincoln; and niece Pam Metzger, Fort Collins, CO.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna, parents, brother Ellis Metzger and sister-in-law Barbara Metzger.

Funeral Services are Saturday, April 16, 10:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church Green Room.

Honorary Pallbearers are his grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Syracuse United Methodist Church.
