LaVern was born April 10, 1909, in Elmwood, to Peter and Carrie (McBride) Nickel . He passed away April 18, 2008, at Eastmont Towers, in Lincoln, at the age 99 years, and 8 days.

LaVern married Wilma at St. Paul United Methodist Church and to this union they had Charles, after Wilma's death in April 1958, LaVern later married Norma and they were together until her death in August 1993. His life was as a Farmer, but he was a member St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elmwood Lion's Club, served on Boards at Elmwood Elevator, Elmwood Coop Oil, Farm Bureau at Weeping Water, St. Paul United Methodist Church, and Eastmont Administrative Board, and he worked for the Funeral Home for 8 years.

LaVern is survived by his son Charles L., of Elmwood, NE, 3 grandchildren Charlene and David Hines, James and wife Rochell, and Lisa Nickel, 9 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren Nieces Shirley Dame, and Janice Neeman, both of Lincoln, NE, along with special friend Linda Roberts, and ex daughter-in-law Barb Nickel, of Elmwood.

LaVern is preceded in death his parents, Pete and Carrie Nickel, 1st wife Wilma, April 58, 2nd wife Norma, August 1993, and sister Marie Nickel and Lorene Misselhiser, grandchildren Thomas & Marie Nickel, great great grandchild Carter.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 21, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elmwood, NE

Visitation will be at the Funeral Home, 113 West "D" Street, Elmwood, on Sunday, April 20, 2008 12 until 9 P.M., with the family greeting friends from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
