LaVerta Marie Meta Hillman Heusman Van Winkle Emshoff was born August 10, 1928 on the family farm near Otoe, NE. She passed away on Saturday March 9, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse, NE. She was the 11th child of Anna Ottens Hillman and Fritz Hillman. She was baptized September 11, 1928 and confirmed on May 10, 1942 at North Branch Lutheran Church. She graduated from Otoe High in 1945, attended Peru Sate College and taught District 10 near Syracuse. On May 27, 1947 she was united in marriage with Marvin Heusman. They made their home northwest of Sterling and had a Grade A Dairy for many years. They had 2 children Bob and Jill and also opened their home to a number of Foster children. LaVerta began work Jan 10, 1972 at the Department of Roads. She was employed there for 18 ½ years. June 16, 1973 she and Donald J. Van Winkle were united in marriage at Sterling. On February 17, 1990 she married Elvin F. Emshoff at First Lutheran Church of Avoca. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school for many years.

LaVerta is survived by Husband: Elvin Emshoff of Syracuse, NE, Daughter: Jill McAuliffe of Sterling, NE, Daughter-in-law: Barb Heusman, Sisters: Bernice Lenker of Syracuse, Marian Curtis of California, Grandchildren: Trish Bessey (Jeff), Bob Heusman Jr. (Wendy), Kevin Heusman (Marissa), Ryan McAuliffe (Becky), Kristi Furtado, 9 Great Grandchildren, Many nieces & nephews, Step daughters: Sue Crafton, Polly Frye, Jonna Hubbard & family's.

She was preceded in death by her Parents: Fritz & Anna (Ottens) Hillman, Husband: Marvin Heusman, Husband: Donald Van Winkle, Son: Robert Heusman Sr., Son-in-law Mike McAuliffe, Grandson: Darrin (Heusman) Bouc, Sisters: Alma Hillman, Lena Knickman (William), Sophie Jacobson (Alvin), Dorothy Buchholz (John), Verena Paap (Lawrence), Helen Kepler (John), Brothers: Alvin Hillman (Viola), Paul Hillman (Wanda), Brother-in-law: Harold Heusman (Doris).

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday March 12 at 10:30 A.M. at First Lutheran Church (North Branch) in rural Avoca, NE. Burial will be held at the Sterling Cemetery in Rural Sterling, NE at 2:30 P.M.

Visitation will be held on Monday March 11 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 6 until 8 P.M. all at the funeral home.
