Lee Paul Wirthele was born on September 3, 1922 on the family farm west of Burr, Nebraska to Paul & Nellie (Kreifels) Wirthele. He departed this life on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at BryanLGH East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 30 days.
Lee was raised and attended school in the Burr area and graduated from Burr High School in 1940. After high school, Lee farmed on the family farm.
Lee served in the US Army from 1944-1946. He was assigned to the 25th Tank Battalion 14th Armored Division, the division later known as the "Liberators". Lee was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #5547 in Syracuse.
After returning home in 1946, Lee resumed farming alongside his family. Lee enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending local county fairs and ball games. He lived in the Burr area until retirement when he moved to the Dunbar area to reside with his sister, Doris, to be closer to his twin brother, Leo, in Nebraska City.
Lee is survived by his sister, Doris Neubauer of Dunbar, NE and his brother Arnold Wirthele of Burr, NE. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Ernest P. Neubauer (Jeri) of Dunbar; Patricia Bassett (Steven) of Lincoln; Debra Todd (Steven) of Kearney; Craig Wirthele (Cheri) of Burr; Paul Wirthele (Chris) of Lincoln, many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Nellie; twin brother, Leo; brother-in-law Ernest Neubauer and sister-in-law Carole Wirthele.
Funeral Services will be Monday August 6, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Burr, NE at 10:30 A.M. Burial will be at the Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse, NE.
Visitation will be Sunday August 5, 2012 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M with family greeting friends from 7 until 9 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
