Obituary

Margaret Ann Smith of Plattsmouth, age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2009 surrounded by her loving family.



Margaret Ann (Ortman) Smith was born on February 11, 1915 in Fort Crook, NE to Edward Anton and Ellen Frances (Sweeney) Ortman. Raised in Omaha, she graduated from Central High School. After graduation she worked for the Federal Land Bank and Creighton University in Omaha. She married Walter Hiller Smith on November 16, 1938, at St. John's Catholic Church in Omaha. She and Walter made their home in Plattsmouth, where Walter was an attorney, and later a Nebraska District Judge. She remained in her home in Plattsmouth until moving to senior housing in the Omaha area in 2007. Margaret was a devoted and loving wife and mother whose interests included baking , gardening, quilting, sewing, playing cards, and meeting with friends at the bakery and the senior center. She loved life and showed this through her heartwarming smile which touched all those who knew her.



She is survived by her eight children: Jerome J. and wife Lillian L. Smith of Granger, IN; Roger C. and wife Esma Lee Smith of Diamondhead, MS; Rev. Thomas W. Smith, CSC, of Notre Dame, IN; Mary Joan and husband Gary Geist of Blaine, MN; Walter J. and wife Mary Lou Smith of Houston, TX; Patricia A. and husband Jack Corbally of Chewelah, WA; Gregory L. Smith and fiancée Hwee Souw of Bellevue, NE; James M. and wife Melissa Smith of Swarthmore, PA; 17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; sisters Elizabeth Sullivan of Omaha and Rita Ortman of Albuquerque, NM; brother-in-law Leon Kresl of Omaha; sisters-in-law Rita Sautter and Alice Smith of Omaha; numerous nieces and nephews.



Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ellen Ortman, husband District Judge Walter H. Smith, 3 brothers and 5 sisters.



Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm, followed by a Rosary at 7 pm on Monday, September 21st at Church of the Holy Spirit, Plattsmouth, NE. Visitation at 9:30 am and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am will be celebrated Tuesday, September 22 at Church of the Holy Spirit, Plattsmouth. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Plattsmouth with lunch to follow at Church of the Holy Spirit. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Holy Cross Missions, PO Box 543, Notre Dame, IN 46556, or St. John's School at Church of the Holy Spirit, Plattsmouth.
