Mary Jeanette Tietjen was born September 13, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska to Val and Florence Mayfield. She passed away peacefully at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha on Monday, December 4, 2023.
Throughout her life, Mary was committed to her faith and her family. She grew up on the family farm outside of Louisville, Nebraska with her parents and three siblings. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church and attended grade school at Heil (rural) school and Louisville Elementary. When her father unexpectedly passed away, Mary helped out by working at the local drug store while in high school. After graduating from Louisville High School in 1960, Mary went on to work at Mutual of Omaha and later as a secretary at Allied Chemical. She married the love of her life, Don Tietjen, on May 31, 1964 at Christ Lutheran Church where they remained faithful members for many years.
Together they raised three children, with Mary spending her time caring for them and running the household, while Don taught Industrial Arts at Louisville Public Schools. Mary loved mothering her children, nieces, and in later years, her grandchildren. It was during this time Mary obtained her beloved nickname "Mee Mee" and she continued to be affectionately known by that name throughout her life. Mary's family and friends always looked forward to Mee Mee's delicious pies during family and church events as they were always perfectly prepared. Mary volunteered at school and church to encourage her children to grow their knowledge and faith and participate in sports/activities. She taught Sunday School and helped coordinate Vacation Bible School for many years. As her children grew up, Mary worked part-time at Blake's Pharmacy, and later full-time at Louisville High School. During the last years of her career, Mary served as a secretary for the plant superintendent at Ash Grove Cement Company, and also administered benefits for the plant's workers. Mary and Don moved to Omaha in 2017, became active members at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, and spent their retirement years traveling and enjoying time with their family.
