Obituary
Ruby Kastens was born February 17, 1913, at home in rural Otoe, Nebraska, to Herman and Adeline (Brinkman) Hillman. She passed away on February 16, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center, in Syracuse, Nebraska, at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 30 days, just in time to celebrate her 96th birthday with Ralph.
Ruby married Ralph Kastens on February 14, 1934, at First Lutheran Church (North Branch), and to this union they raised 4 children Arlene, Colleen, Merlin, and Betty. She was a member of the Women's Circle at Church, and enjoyed bowling, raising flowers, playing cards, and was known for her wonderful pies. Family enjoys memories of Ruby giving haircuts to nieces and nephews, going fishing with Ralph and then canning the fish. She loved being with family, and recently she wrote poems expressing her emotions.
Ruby is survived by her children Arlene and husband Larry Voges, of Otoe, NE, Colleen and husband Roby Lamb, of Unadilla, NE Merlin and wife Diane Kastens, of Harlan, IA, Betty and husband Johny Bennett, of Otoe, NE, 20 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren, sister Leona Mason, of Florida, sister-in-laws Emma Hillman, of Syracuse, NE, and Reva Hillman, of Otoe, NE, brother-in-law Alvin Hillman, of Otoe, NE
Ruby is preceded in Death by her parents, husband Ralph in 1996, and 9 brothers and sisters, Meta Haveman, Minnie Leefers, Henry Hillman, Mabel Skrabal, Ralph Hillman, Viola Kastens, Edna Neeld, Maynard Hillman, and Harold Hillman.
Funeral Services will be Friday, February 20, 2009 @ 10:30 A.M. at First Lutheran Church, (North Branch), 7 miles North of Syracuse, NE, with burial at the Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church, (North Branch).
VISITATION Wednesday, February 18th from 1 P.M. until 9 P.M. and Thursday, February 19th from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with the family greeting friends from 6 P.M. until 9 P.M. all at the Funeral Home. The casket will be open one hour before services at the Church.
