IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley
Edwards
May 25, 1949 – May 16, 2019
Shirley Hennings was born May 25, 1949 to Dayton and Doris (Graham) Hennings. She grew up on a farm near Louisville, Nebraska. She went to country school with childhood classmates that still kept in touch. Shirley went to Louisville High School in 8 th grade when the two schools consolidated, She attended the First United Methodist Church in Louisville where she spent much time and learned from her mom who taught Sunday School, that faith is so much a part of life that without it life is nothing. After High School, she attended Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha. She met LaRue Edwards when High School classmates of his sister wanted them to meet. They actually had attended Sunday school when they were kids. Shirley remarked, "What were the chances of that?" They married January 9, 1971, which was an easy date to remember but never thought about it when they set the date… 1-9-71. Shirley worked at Methodist Hospital before beginning work at Immanuel Hospital on February 2, 1972. While working at Immanuel Medical Center she received many Nursing awards, and retired in November 2013 after a stroke. Shirley worked there 41 plus years. Together, Shirley and LaRue built their home moving in January 1972. They have 4 children Michael Scott, Terry Le, Karen Renee and David Thomas. In 1984, they joined St. Paul U.M.C. She was active in children ministry, writing plays for kids to do in church, directing children summer theater and helping the church write Sunday school material, directing VBS, and teaching Sunday School for 30 years. In 2013, she took a faith community Health network program because she wanted to continue to use her nursing knowledge and help others. In November 2013, Shirley became parish nurse for St. Paul and was active in the health ministry team. She gave health presentations and started a support group for cancer and chronic illness and their care givers. She prayed that what she has done in her life has been what God wanted her to do.
Shirley and her husband loved each other amid experiencing a rough cancer journey. She hoped her children and grandchildren have fond memories of her and the things they did together. She shared that she loved each one of them, wanted to have them remember that they are unique, and to please take care of each other.
She wanted her friends and extended family members o know that she thanked them for allowing her to be part of their life, and sharing her favorite Bible passage, 'For I know the plans I have for you "Declares The Lord" Plans to protect you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' Jeremiah 29:11. "God Bless You," from Shirley.
She is survived by her husband LaRue Edwards, brother - Robert Hennings, sister -Cathy Egbarts and brother - James Hennings, children Mike (Heather) Edwards, Terry (Tammy) Edwards, Karen (Dave) Edwards-Scurlock, David (Natalie) Edwards, grandkids Justin (Katie) Edwards, Boughston (Margaret) Edwards, Josh Edwards, Jacob Scurlock, Cole Edwards, Brooklyn Edwards, and Marissa Edwards and great grandchild Emmitt Edwards.
