Shirley Mae (Douglas) Malone, 88 of Palmyra, was born on October 7, 1928 to Dorothy and Arthur Douglas of Palmyra. She passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 in Lincoln, NE.
Shirley graduated from Palmyra High School with a regents scholarship to the University of Nebraska. After graduation from high school she joined, along with her sister Winnie, Ruth Coleman's all girl orchestra and toured the midwest. She worked at the Elgin watch factory and Miller and Paine in Lincoln before marriage. She married her high school sweetheart Mike in May of 1949. Together they had 8 children with 3 that survived childbirth. Shirley loved gardening and being outdoors. She was always there to help out on the farm. She liked to quilt, paint, write poetry and had a sewing business (Shirley's sewing) for several years. Shirley was a 4-H leader and involved in church activities. She sewed many church banners and vestments. She was a true prayer warrior morning and night praying by name each person in need of a prayer. Music was important in her life and she was the organist for St. Leo's church for over 35 years. She loved to read, especially books about her Catholic faith. She lived on the family farm east of Palmyra all of her life.
She is survived by her children Maureen (D.C.) Hoffman of Lone Tree, Colorado, Jayme (Shelley) Malone of Lincoln and Melanie Malone of Grand Island. Grandchildren Marci (Chris) DeAmbrose - Lincoln, Ryan (Janice) Malone - Lincoln and Lauren (Zach) Roberts of Lone Tree, Colorado. Great Grandchildren - Ciaran, Lilly, Declan, Liam DeAmbrose - Logan, Wyatt, Adeline Malone and Nolan Roberts. Siblings Winnie Ricketts - Cheyenne, Wyoming, Dean (Judy) Douglas - Elmwood, Sue (Gary) Hoy - Commerce City, Colorado, Pam (Don) Apley - Lincoln.
Proceeded in death her husband Mike, children - Joan, William, Timothy, Kevin, Samuel, sister Darlene and parents.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 10:00 at St. Leo's Catholic Church 330 West 8 th Palmyra, NE, with burial at St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery, Palmyra.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home, then at church with family greeting friends from 6:30 until time of Rosary at 7:30 P.M.
Memorials are suggested to St. Leo's Catholic Church or Family's Choice.
