Vaughn is home now (in his eternal home) and at rest. Vaughn passed away peacefully on September 3, 2013 at home. There is a song "Home Is Where the Heart Is" that sums it all up. Our home here on earth is only temporary.
Into this temporary life, Vaughn was born February 3, 1949 in Bangor, Maine while his father Robert was serving in the Air Force at Loring Air Force Base. Robert and Ilene (Vaughn's mother) had seven children.
When Vaughn was a sophomore in high school in Walton, Nebraska, he met a young freshman named Kathie but it was not until 43 years later that they found each other again. That story comes later.
Vaughn left Walton in 1965; he joined the army a year later in 1966. His 27-year army career spanned Viet Nam to Desert Storm. He also did recruiting for the Guard. For a time they lived in Kansas City, near his wife Ruth Ann's family. In 1993 they moved to Lincoln to be closer to Vaughn's family. Vaughn and his first wife Ruth Ann were married for 20 years. Ruth Ann passed away in 1999. Their sons are John Hackstadt and Justin Hackstadt.
Fishing and camping with family were special times in Vaughn's life. Kathie related that one happy memory includes the day Vaughn went fishing with his grandson Alex. That day Alex caught a cat fish that was about half of Alex's size at the time!
Vaughn enjoyed included making crosses. Our church (TLC-Tecumseh Lutheran Community Church) was blessed by one of Vaughn's crosses.
Also Vaughn was good with plants and loved flowers.
One of Vaughn's great joys in life was singing. In fact, music is a part of the story of Vaughn's last 5 years…
Vaughn is survived by his wife Kathie of Syracuse, NE, and sons John Hackstadt and Justin Hackstadt; grandchildren: Haley, Hannah and Leland, Marissa and Alex (all of Lincoln, NE); sisters Denne Thompson of Illinois and Sharon Snyder of Lincoln, along with brother Glen Bear and sister-in-law Becky of Lincoln.
Vaughn was preceeded in death by his parents Robert and Ilene, his first wife Ruth Ann, two sisters, Yvonne and Roberta and a brother Rothe.
