Veletta M. Windhorst Janssen died December 27, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Home in Syracuse, Nebraska at the age of 93 years. She was born October 17, 1918 and is the daughter of Otto & Mary Windhorst.
On January 2, 1919, she was baptized by Pastor Gabriel at German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Syracuse. She was confirmed on March 20, 1932 by Pastor Krebs of Luther Memorial.
She grew up on a farm 1½ miles southwest of Syracuse.
She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1936. She taught four years at rural schools, two years at District 72, and two years at District 58.
Veletta & Harry Janssen were married at Luther Memorial Church on December 17, 1940. They moved to a farm seven miles southwest of Syracuse. They farmed for 42 years and then moved to a new home in Syracuse in 1983.
She was a member of Luther Memorial.
She taught Sunday school for 14 years. She was a member of WELCA and was an officer of WELCA several times.
Veletta was a homemaker and enjoyed working together with her husband Harry. They enjoyed taking walks together and traveling. Harry & Veletta visited all 50 states and many countries. In 1998, she especially enjoyed visiting New Zealand, where her granddaughter Lara was an exchange student at the time.
Veletta was preceded in death by her parents Otto & Mary Windhorst, as well has her husband Harry, sister Irene, brothers Orville & Virgil Windhorst, sister-in-law Eunice.
She is survived by her son Larry of Volga, SD; and Larry's wife Marcia and grandchildren Matthew of Brookings, SD; Pastor Lara of Rialto, CA, and Tiffany of Sioux Falls, SD. She is also survived by sister-in-law Ruth Windhorst. Surviving nieces are Deanne Gerking, Linda Janssen, Gay Lepert, Lana Friedrich, and Karen Munter and nephews Kent Windhorst and Duane Windhorst. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be Saturday December 31 at 2:00 P.M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Syracuse, NE. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday December 30 from 1 P.M. until 9 P.M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. Family will greet friends from 5 until 7 P.M. also at the church.
