Verna Marie (Michon) Metzger, 78, died at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse on March 23, 2011. She was born on October 14, 1932 in Nebraska City to Joseph J. and Helen I. (Burdick) Michon. She lived in Nebraska City until the 5th grade before moving to Auburn where she graduated from high school in 1950. After graduation, she moved to Syracuse and married Kenneth D. Metzger in 1953. They had four children: Ronald Dean, Terry Lee, Kay Dee, and Kent Dwain. She worked as a bookkeeper at Kuennings and Lamb, clerk at Hill's Pharmacy, and several other retail shops in Syracuse. She was a member of the Syracuse United Methodist Church and belonged to the United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary, and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, arts and crafts, and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by husband Kenneth Metzger of Syracuse; daughter and son-in-law Kay and Mike Gerdes of Talmage; sons Kent Metzger of Everett, WA and Terry Metzger of Phoenix, AZ; son and daughter-in-law Ron and Dee Metzger of Elkhorn; grandchildren Courtney Gerdes of Philadelphia, PA, Cara (David) Mack of Phoenix, AZ, Brett (Mary) Metzger of Omaha, Carley (Jeremy) Goracke of Sterling, Kristen Metzger of Omaha, Kendra Gerdes of Lincoln, and Thomas and Taylor Gerdes of Talmage; great-grandson Keegan Mack of Phoenix, AZ; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ellis and Barb Metzger of Lincoln; nephew Doug (Mary) Metzger and family of Lincoln; niece Pam Metzger of Fort Collins, CO; cousins Judy (Roy) Bretthorst of Syracuse, Kay (Harlan) Hillman of Syracuse, J. Richard Groves of Nashville, TN, and Barbara Ferris of St. Joe, AR; special friends Harry and Pattie Page of Syracuse, and many other friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, father-in-law, and mother-in-law.
Funeral Services are Thursday, March 31, 10:00 A.M. at the Syracuse United Methodist Church with Pastor Tony Dawson officiating.
Honorary pallbearers are the grandchildren.
The family will be greeting friends on Wednesday, March 30 from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorial are suggested to the American Cancer Society, United Methodist Church, or Good Samaritan Center.
