Virgil Ted Halvorsen, 83 of Palmyra, was born July 16, 1932 at Unadilla, NE to Herman Earl and Minnie (Beckard) Halvorsen. He passed away on August 17, 2015 at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, NE after a short battle with lung cancer. He graduated from Unadilla High School in 1948.

Virgil retired in December 1995 after 40 years with the State of Nebraska Department of Roads.

He was a 50 year member of Nash-Jensen Post 195 American Legion, Legion Color Guard, 40/8 Voiture 103 and the Palmyra United Methodist Church. He also served on the Rosewood Cemetery board for many years.

He was united in marriage to Wilma Dowding on September 24, 1955 at the Palmyra United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Wilma; Sons: Steve (Tammy) of Hickman, Todd and fiancé Shanna of Plattsmouth; Daughter: Susan (Preston) Hutchison of Hershey; Grandchildren: Jordan (Meredith) Halvorsen of Virginia Beach, VA, Tyler (Katrina) Halvorsen of Omaha, Wade (Sara) Halvorsen of Aurora, Rusty Hutchison of North Platte, Haley Halvorsen of Houston, TX, Heather Hutchison of Kearney, and Hannah Halvorsen of Oklahoma City, OK; Great Grandchildren: Lyla and Liam Halvorsen, Dallas Halvorsen, Heaven and Riggin Hutchison; Brothers: Marvin (Jenny) of Syracuse, Larry (Rosemarie) of Unadilla; Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law Roger (Sheri) Dowding of Syracuse and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his Infant Son: Michael; Parents: Earl & Minnie; Father-in-law and Mother-in-law: Roy (Pauline) Dowding; Brothers: John, Earl Jr. and Sister and Brother-in-law: Marie (Delbert) Heather.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday August 20 at 1:30 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Palmyra, NE. Burial will be at Rosewood Cemetery in Palmyra.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday August 19 from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 6 until 8 P.M. at the funeral home in Syracuse.
