Obituary

Virgil Gene Reynolds, age 89, of Cedar Creek, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 23, 2024. He was born on February 17, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Virgil and Edna Pearl (McCarron) Reynolds.

Gene grew up in Omaha and was an avid baseball player throughout high school. He graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1952 and soon after joined the United States Naval Reserves. On November 13, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Lois Mae Nanos, in Papillion, Nebraska. Together, they were blessed with four children: Chari, William, Cathi, and Robert.

Following their marriage, Gene began a career in the printing business, working his way to become a journeyman pressman and later lead pressman on sophisticated web presses. He dedicated many years to Interstate Printing Company.  Gene was a longtime member of the local Printers Union #533. He was also an active member of the Elks Club BPOE #39 in Omaha. Gene enjoyed horse racing, trips with Lois to the casino, music, NASCAR, Husker football, and was an all-around sports enthusiast.

His life was focused on his family, hosting gatherings nearly every weekend to celebrate birthdays and holidays. He was a master griller and a lifeguard for his grandchildren, always ensuring they didn't swim too far from shore.

Gene is survived by his children: Chari (Lawrence) Kelley of West Palm Beach, Florida; William (Michelle) Reynolds of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Cathi Pankonin of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; and Robert (Regina) Reynolds of Louisville, Nebraska. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Shawn Leader, Marissa Vavra, Carissa Stock, Michael Reynolds, Kevin Leader, Christopher Pankonin, Heather Debolt, Andrew Pankonin, Stephanie Smith, Nicholas Reynolds, Katelyn Lang, and Alexandra Sousoeff, along with 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Harvey Schiefelbein, his beloved wife Lois Reynolds, grandson Anthony Reynolds, son-in-law Philip Pankonin, brother Gregory Reynolds, and sister Gay Virginia Reynolds.

A private family celebration of life will be held for Gene at a later date.
